If your furnace or water heater is a gas-burning appliance, HVAC experts recommend that you have it inspected by a licensed and certified heating contractor each and every year. Why is this so important? The fact is that over 80 people die in their homes on an annual basis due to excess levels of carbon monoxide generated by faulty furnaces and water heaters.

What is Carbon Monoxide and why is it Dangerous?

CO is a colorless, tasteless gas that is undetectable without specialized equipment or detectors. Most people keep their windows closed during the cold winter months, and too much CO trapped in unventilated areas can quickly lead to symptoms such as:

–Persistent and severe headaches that may affect many family members at once

–A general feeling of weakness, coupled with nausea and vomiting

–Symptoms that lessen markedly when afflicted person exits a house or lets in fresh air

Carbon monoxide poisoning is extremely serious: it exerts its influence exceedingly fast and may result in serious injury and death before anyone is aware something is wrong. This is why many victims are killed as they sleep.

What is Involved in a Yearly Heater Inspection?

Only have a reputable, licensed, and certified heating contractor in your state handle your yearly inspections: they will have the credentials, experience, and know-how to look for certain problems and correct them if necessary. An inspection should include:

–Inspecting the inside and outside of a vent pipe as well as the stack

–Checking safety controls for the exhaust system as well as all other safety controls

–Inspect and service the heat exchanger

–Cleaning fan wheels and ensuring they are in proper working order

–Replacing air filter for forced-air systems

Getting a yearly heater inspection makes good common sense: it’s also a good idea to install a carbon monoxide detector in your furnace room as well as near the family’s living quarters.

When investing in a car, it is important to look at the cars past MOT certificates, so you know what you are actually buying. It will help you understand what condition the car is currently in and whether the car’s state has altered over time. However, if the car is under three years old, no past MOT certificates will be available, since a car needs only to be tested every year from its third year. Remember, when buying a used car to immediately ask for the current MOT certificate from the seller, otherwise it might not be roadworthy.

The past MOT certificates will demonstrate that the car has met environmental and road safety standards, however, it does not mean that the vehicle is safe and roadworthy for the full year the certificate is valid. It is only a confirmation of the fact that vehicle is roadworthy at that time. Hence, changes to the car can occur after the test for that year are completed, so its very important that the used car is checked out for any damages at the point of sale. Neither does the test check the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox, so it may be also of great importance to have these checked out. The MOT test will, however, examine:

1.The condition of the body and vehicle structure;

2.The fuel system;

3.The exhaust system;

4.Lights, doors, mirrors, the load security and the bonnet;

5.Brakes, tyres and wheels;

6.Wipers and washers and the windscreen;

7.Steering and suspension, the horn, seat belts and the seats.

8.The MOT test will also analyse the car’s fuel emissions, as well as inspect the registration plate and the car’s Vehicle Identification Number.

When looking at past MOT tests, it’s important to look for dramatic changes from year to year. A good way to discover any alterations to the car’s state is to check that MOT mileage records are in line with service records and to ensure that the mileage has increased at a consistent rate each year.

It’s always best to ask the seller for the certificate; however, if the seller can not provide the current certificate at the present time, it might be best to check online before you buy. All you need to provide is the test number from the MOT certificate and the document reference number from the registration certificate (V5C). If you are looking for the car’s MOT history, then a quick ring to VOSA will give you all the information you need, including the list of repairs recommended at the point of MOT.

A quick look at past MOT certificate will enable you to make a valid judgment on the performance of the car. However, if you are still worried about deterioration since the last MOT, it’s a good idea to have the car checked over either before or after purchase. If the MOT is soon to run out after purchase, then make an appointment with you local test centre immediately.

If you are looking for an MOT test in Coventry, then try: http://www.binleywoodsservicecentre.co.uk.

Your car’s exhaust system dissipates the gases released by the engine. They can be potentially harmful to drivers, bystanders, and the environment if they’re not properly dealt with. Understanding how car exhausts work, one should know how each individual component contributes to the system as a whole.

The air pump pumps compressed air into the exhaust manifold. Driven by a belt that is connected to the engine, the air pump allows the oxygen pumped along with the compressed air to aid in burning unburned fuel left on other parts of the engine, which converts carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide.

The exhaust manifold, which was mentioned above, is attached to the cylinder head and leads the car exhausts gases created by the engine from combustion chamber to the exhaust pipe at the end of the car. The exhaust manifold can be found under the intake manifold. They’re made of cast iron, stainless steel, or aluminum.

Catalytic converters are installed in the exhaust line between the mufflers and exhaust manifold. It converts the gas emissions like carbon monoxide into the less dangerous form carbon dioxide and water. It basically lessens the pollution caused by the car. The converter is lined with chemicals that change these harmful substances into harmless ones before they leave the car.

The muffler is made of metal and easily the most recognizable part of the car exhausts system. It is connected to the under body of the car, and its main function is to reduce the noise of the exhausts system.

The engine combustion process creates gas emissions. A lot of noise is generated when gases leave the engine. There’s also a great deal of noise created by the opening and closing of the car exhausts valves. The muffler converts that sound energy and extreme pressure into heat, dissipating the sound waves’ energy.

The first type of mufflers will bounce the gas around to lower its energy with baffles, while others have pipes wrapped in specific metals that absorb the noise.

The final component of the car exhausts system is the tail pipe. It’s the part the sticks out of the back or your car, and is attached to the muffler. It releases the gases that have passed through the rest of the system and into the environment.

Modern cars often include oxygen sensors as part of their car exhausts because optimal performance depends on an exact proportion of fuel mixed with oxygen. Hopefully understanding the individual parts of the car exhausts system will help you in purchasing a car and also help you understand the steps taken by manufacturers to curb pollution and maximize performance.

Honda’s got a perennial list of nice sport utilities for every size of family. With its bold and hunky Pilot you get a truly world class vehicle with nothing but a laundry list of accolades. And Honda’s CR-V compact sport utilities, you get function, form, and overall great quality that you would expect among one of the leading automotive manufacturers. With the sport utility market slowing down due to sluggish sales and rising gas prices, current owners of these prestigious sport utilities are furiously looking for hot performance products one can buy to increase performance and fuel economy. Here are some of the hottest products that are found at most retailers.

Performance Air Filters – No car, truck or SUV is complete without putting a performance air filter in there. Cheap and easy to install (averaging only $35-55 per), these filters replace your existing stock filter within minutes. These higher flowing filters will increase both power and fuel efficiency with it’s design to make the engine breathe in more air therefore seeing some of those gains. Additionally, it will be one less part you will have to replace because these are cleanable and reusable. Applications for the Pilot 3.5 V6 and the CR-V 2.2L and 2.4L fours are widely available through K&N, Airaid, and AEM. And retailers such as Wal-Mart, Autozone and PepBoys keep these in stock. As a result, a performance air filter is a spectacular add on that will pay dividends in no time.

Custom Exhaust System – Another great add on is a performance exhaust system. Performance exhausts can be as simple as just replacing your existing muffler or changing your entire system, forward of the exhaust manifold. What you gain in return is a great sounding exhaust and better power and economy when the gases dispel easier. Flowmaster, Borla, and Magnaflow sell mufflers and bolt on kits that usually takes half a day to install using basic hand tools. There are also various exhaust systems for the Honda Pilot and CR-V models that come with warranties, look out for those as well. Don’t leave a great sounding exhaust system off that list of goods to purchase for your SUV.

Some other great products to consider for your Honda Pilot or CR-V are engine management control modules for lowering automatic transmission shift points for enhanced fuel economy and power. Brake upgrades are not a bad choice either, simply replacing your existing rotors with a cross-drilled variety or slotted will go a long way in preventing brake fade and excessive heating. And another great upgrade is a conversion to either electric or water/gas hybrids. Especially with the rising cost of fuel these days, hybrids are making that return to stardom with its proven rise in gas economy. Plus the IRS will pay you tax credits for owning a clean fuel vehicle. For more information on how you can transform your Pilot or CR-V into a hybrid inexpensively, please visit my site link below.

When it comes to hard-working systems that often go unappreciated, your suspension system takes the cake. Similar to a plumber, when your air suspension is doing its job well, no one notices. But, when something goes wrong, suddenly everything turns to crap.

Your suspension system and shocks support the weight of the car, its passengers and any additional cargo while allowing the tires and wheels to move up and down to compensate for uneven pavement. That’s a big job-too big for stock parts. So, whether you need off-road performance or are just in search of a smoother ride, upgrading your suspension system is the place to start. Here’s how.

Replacing conventional steel springs with an air suspension system is one of the most popular methods for bolstering your stock suspension. Powered by an engine-driven or electric air compressor, the pump inflates and deflates air bags, which provide support to your suspension. Best of all, you can control the amount of pressure in the air bags, making them stiffer when you’re loaded down with cargo or softer when you’re just cruising around town. Air suspension also allows the vehicle to sit extremely low, yet rise high enough to clear obstacles like speed bumps and curbs. This system allows the user to adjust each wheel’s air pressure individually and even tilt the vehicle side to side or front to back. And they’re great when paired with lowering springs or lowering kits.

While air suspension systems are popular with trucks and SUVs, performance coil springs or leaf springs are favored upgrades for all types of vehicles from zippy sport compacts to mud-bogging Jeeps. Coil springs absorb shock through the collection and release of energy and are constructed of an elastic material that’s twisted into a helix like a mattress spring. Somewhat similar, leaf springs are one of the oldest and most simple forms of suspension. The one advantage that a leaf spring holds over its helical counterpart is that the end of the springs can be guided along a definite path. Dating as far back as medieval times, leaf springs are typically reserved for larger vehicles, farm equipment and railway cars. While a leaf spring can reduce some of the vibration, it’s difficult to control and creates static friction resulting from the motion of the suspension. As a result, it has been used less and less in automobiles since the 1970s. But, a suspension system is not a collection of springs alone.

Shock absorbers are a vital part of any performance-grade suspension system. Keeping the ride smooth, they balance out the varying terrain by absorbing or dissipating energy, working in unison with the springs which only store energy. Aftermarket shock absorbers are available as custom-fit, universal performance shocks, OEM-style and even factory replacements, ensuring the perfect match for replacing those worn out or under performing stock components.

Shocks and air suspension can be used together with lowering springs to achieve the ultimate low-rider. But even if lowering your rig isn’t the ultimate goal, performance-grade suspension parts are one of the best upgrades to enhance the performance and feel of your vehicle.

The Serenis 360 and 180 incorporate the new Serenis water delivery system that offers you a totally original shower experience. This system uses Ideal Standard’s innovative ‘in-line valve’ technology.

Water is piped through the central column of the enclosure where separate in-line controls let you decide whether the water goes through the fixed overhead shower spray or through the hand spray.

As these controls are individual, if your water pressure is high enough you can use both shower heads simultaneously creating a really luxurious shower.

Another exceptional feature of the Serenis water delivery system is the design of the ‘on/off’ valve controls.

These are positioned both inside and outside the enclosure so that you can turn the shower on from outside the shower enclosure, eliminating the ‘dead leg’ of cold water before you enter the shower, and off from the inside allowing you to dry yourself within the enclosure where the environment is nice and warm – pure genius.

And finally, the temperature control can be accessed from inside and outside the enclosure, allowing you complete control throughout your showering experience. Showering at its best! Sheets of crystal clear glass almost six and a half feet tall are sculpted into an arc of geometric precision.

The arc of glass is then mounted in an elegant setting of acrylic, aluminium and polished chrome and fitted with the latest in shower technology.

Driving with your kids can be the best way to have some quality time together. There are none of the usual distractions like the television set, computer games, your family pet, and all other things in your household. However for long drives, these little tots can get pretty uncomfortable and would only cause you undue stress.

There are some pretty exciting games that would keep your little kids from asking “Are we there yet?” much too many times. And some of these games would not need you to spend some of that budget you have been keeping just a little tight because you are thinking of purchasing that new set of Land Rover exhaust system parts for your family vehicle.

You can keep your kids busy by giving them an allowance for the whole duration of the trip. You can simply tell them that such would be used for whatever they would want to buy anywhere between your home and your chosen destination. At least that way, they could start thinking where they would be spending their cash and you could also teach them the right way of how to budget their money. It would also be the best time to teach them the power of making the right choices.

To tell them more of where you are actually going, before going on the trip, you can have some maps handy. You can give each of your kids one copy so that they can know where you already are and stop asking you how long you would still have to travel. Hand them each a crayon or a pen so they can draw on the map with the sights that caught their interest.

You can also play games like the one called mystery writing. This game is just easy. Just ask the child to hold out his hand and ask him to close his eyes. Then write a word or a letter on his hand using your finger. The child has to guess what is it that you wrote down. Or you can also improvise by writing on the back of the child instead of on the hand.

Is vehicle maintenance an issue for you? I have some suggestions for you to help keep the service tech out of the reach of your Porsche for expensive problems that are avoidable.

The very first thing you should do is to open the glove box and pull out the vehicle information booklet. In there you will find all the information about the vehicle you want to know, from vehicle weight, wheel base, oil type to be used, spark plugs, coolant, etc as well as required scheduled maintenance. There will be a vehicle maintenance log you can keep the date and mileage you had maintenance work done. These required maintenance mile posts are critical in the validation of your Manufacturer Warranty.

Another excellent place to keep this information is on your computer, keep it there and it will be in front of you when ever you want it. Most computers have Works or Word and in there you will find Vehicle logs such as Road Trip, Vehicle Detail, Vehicle Maintenance Check List, and Vehicle Repair Log. It is a good idea to set up and keep these logs not only as a vehicle maintenance reminder, but when you sell the car you have verification of everything you have had done to the vehicle.

Another reason to keep good vehicle maintenance records is to keep track of not only routine maintenance parts such as fuel, oil, and air filters, belts, brakes, etc. but other service work like air-conditioning, exhaust system parts replacement, tires and engine adjustments. Repeated service work or parts replacement on one item may be a hint to an underlying cause, without good record keeping your service tech may not catch the problem until something catastrophic happens that could have been preventable.

Consider extended warranties if available. The reason for this is because when your original warranty expires the work is on you from this point. Of course you can use the same service facility you have always gone to but if you want to save a little money and you happen to be mechanically inclined you may be able to some of the maintenance work yourself. A good shop manual is absolutely necessary and can be obtained at many auto parts stores, also a very good resource is the internet. I have done several Porsche as well as other car and truck projects from resources found on the internet which are free.

If you decide that you are going to perform the work yourself make sure you understand the job first (don’t start something you can’t finish). Your record keeping will help when going to the parts store or shopping for parts online to make sure that you are buying the right parts (aftermarket parts or OEM). Next the shop manual or your online source will suggest the proper tools you need to do the job correctly. Finally and most importantly is safety. When working under a car that is not on a lift, make sure that you use jack stand of adequate strength to do the job not concrete or wood blocks.Working around the engine requires disconnecting the battery, not only to avoid accidental shock but to prevent inadvertent ignition. It is also a good idea as always when working around machinery to remove rings or loose clothing.

When we’re faced with deep snow, we might be tempted to go fast and blast on through it. Especially if we have 4-wheel drive. After all, it’s just snow and our vehicle should be able to show it who’s boss.

Well, if that’s your approach to driving in snow, you might be in for a surprise because not all snow is the same. Once you get snow up to your bumper and deeper, consider what can happen:

Dry snow is projected up over your grill and onto the windshield, reducing visibility to near zero even with wipers going at top speed.

The undercarriage of your vehicle drags through the snow providing more resistance than just your bumper, causing you to loose traction.

You ride up onto the snow and then sink down into it like a trap. You’re now essentially “high centered” if you’re on hard snow, engulfed in a huge pile if it’s dry snow, or the wet snow has a “death grip” on your exhaust system and undercarriage much like concrete.

The best approach is to drive slowly through deep snow so you maintain good visibility and can stop if you sense that you’re going to be unsuccessful with continued forward travel. If you get too deep into it, you might have quite a time backing out, even with 4-wheel drive.

One of Clint Eastwood’s characters reminded all who would listen, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” Well, that applies to drivers as well as vehicles. If you push your limits (or continue to test them), don’t be surprised if one day you find yourself inconvenienced as a result of your own doing.

Don’t let the excitement of your new purchase overwhelm your good sense. A new pocket bike must be broken in correctly if you want the bike to function correctly. If you do not take the proper steps, you will dramatically decrease your engine’s life. Opinions vary significantly on the correct way to break in a bike. We will discuss two widespread methods to break a pocket bike in. The most common method is often called “heat cycling.” Heat cycling means you run the engine at idle or barely above idle for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. After this time the engine will be right below the normal operating temperature. Then you turn the engine off and let the bike cool down. Once the engine is cool, you turn the bike on for another 10 minutes and then shut it down again. Do this process for a total of three to four times. When you have finished this process, run the bike at an easy pace for about 1 full tank of gas. Don’t put stress on the engine and avoid high RPM. When you have run through the tank of gas, your bike is ready to go and can be used at normal speeds.

The second method, called “racing break in” is less commonly used, though it is more fun. First, warm the engine for 5 minutes by letting it idle on the stand. Slowly bring the throttle up to figure out where the clutch engages. This way you can avoid getting ejected by applying too much throttle when riding. Then you hit the track. Take the first lap slowly to warm up the tires. On the second lap you can hit the gas and ride for 10 to 15 minutes. By accelerating, decelerating and hitting varying RPMS you will break in the engine. Remember to make sure that the engine has been sufficiently warmed up. Although you don’t have to ride the bike too hard, you also shouldn’t ride so slowly that the clutch never completely engages or you will burn out the clutch. You will be able to tell when the clutch is fully engaged by the sound of your motor and the feeling of the bike. It may be necessary to adjust the clutch to the rider’s weight.

When you are breaking your bike in, your oil and gas mixture will be slightly different than during normal riding. Some experts say that it is best to use a richer mixture of oil (40 parts gas to 1 one part oil) during break in instead of the standard ratio of 50 to 1, while others will say you should always stick with the normal mixture. Read your instruction manual to see what the manufacturer recommends. During break in you should use non-synthetic oil. This helps the piston ring to seat fully. After the first gallon of gas, you should use full or semi-synthetic oil.

After your first ride look the bike over for any loosened fasteners. You should also periodically check your spark plug to verify that you are using the correct fuel mixture. If your ratio is correct the plug’s insulator will be a medium tan-ish color. However, if you see that your plug is white-ish or grey than you know that your engine is running lean.
